Classic Canadian Songs from Smithsonian Folkways

George Clutesi (1905–88), a respected elder of the Tseshaht band of the Nootka (Nuu-chah-nult) First Nation on Vancouver Island, initiated the revival of North West Coast ritual songs and dances that were prohibited by Canadian law from 1884 until 1951. In 1949, having received permission to resume practicing traditional song and dance, Clutesi began teaching Tseshaht songs to children in the very residential school where he had earlier been denied his language and culture. The "Nootka Farewell Song," sung by Clutesi and his Port Alberni singers, was the property of Tseshaht Chief Adam Shewish (1920–90), a strong supporter of his mission.
