Classic Canadian Songs from Smithsonian Folkways

Characterized as a "purely Canadian" shanty song by collector Edith Fowke (notes to FW04052), "Hogan's Lake" was recorded by O. J. (John) Abbott (1872–1962) when he was eighty-four years old. Dating back to the 1860s, this song describes the daily routine of a square-timber gang felling trees along the Black River (Rivière Noire) in Québec.
