Classic Canadian Songs from Smithsonian Folkways

Jean "Ti-Jean" Carignan (1916–88), Québec's most famous violoneux, rose to prominence on the international stage, frequently performing with his friends Canadian folk singer Alan Mills and American folk singer Pete Seeger. Admired by classical violinists and traditional fiddlers alike for his virtuosic style of playing, Carignan had a repertoire of 7,000 tunes, learned by ear from other fiddlers and recordings. This rendition of "Lord MacDonald's Reel" pays tribute to one of his idols, Irish émigré fiddler Michael Coleman (1891–1945). Carignan accompanies himself, jigging or clogging with his feet in the French-Canadian tradition.
