Classic Canadian Songs from Smithsonian Folkways

Sam Gesser's first two albums for Folkways Records, Folk Songs of French Canada (FW06929, 1952) and Folk Songs of Newfoundland (FW06831, 1953), feature fellow Montréaler Alan Mills (1913–77), who left a career in journalism to become one of Canada's most important and best-known folksingers. Mills recorded over twenty albums for Folkways in English, French, and Yiddish, including several albums for children. His most famous song, "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," appears on Folk Songs for Young Folk: Animals, Vol. 1 (FW07677, 1956).
