Wasanti Paranjape, Musical Pioneer

Wasanti Paranjape's family was remarkably modern for the early twentieth century. Her father, a successful lawyer, was open to new ideas. The year that Wasanti was born, he bought a car. He returned from attending a European Scout Jamboree with a Faltboot (a folding kayak) and a taste for non-vegetarian food. Although cooking at home remained strictly vegetarian, her father employed a special cook to prepare "non-veg" food. Mrs. Paranjape grew up boating and playing sports, always wearing a sari. She studied science at a girls' college far from home in Benares and later studied law in Pune, Maharashtra.
