Ukrainian Roots Music in Canada

Radio offers a forum for musicians and a unifying force for the community. Regular Ukrainian broadcasts have been on the air in Canada since the 1940s. They feature news from Ukraine and Canada, announce community events, promote regional businesses, and highlight the music of local and international performers. Some programs draw huge ratings and are repackaged for broadcast in other markets. The Ukrainian Hour with host Dan Chomlak was one of the highest-rated radio programs in the Edmonton market during the 1970s. Chomlak produced a taped version of the program for broadcast in Winnipeg and other markets. The Zabava Program with host Robert J. Tomkins is currently broadcast in both Edmonton and Winnipeg.
