Ukrainian Roots Music in Canada

New generations of Ukrainian Canadians have been exposed to a wider palette of musical influences. They often combine borrowings from other cultures and genres with traditional Ukrainian folk tunes to create a fusion that reflects their experiences and identities. Finding a unique new way to dress up an old melody is the goal of many bands. The Kubasonics of Edmonton have released three recordings of Ukrainian fusion music and perform this music for non-Ukrainian audiences at festivals across North America. Other Edmonton bands, such as Milennia, Kalabai and UB, and many other Canadian bands, have also experimented with repackaging traditional folk tunes.
